“A great attitude coupled with a well-thought-out and executed plan is the path to success. A great attitude without a plan is only a party.”
This opening line, which I use in all my public seminars, sets the stage for understanding the critical importance of having a playbook—a strategic plan—in both business and life. Just as a football team relies on its playbook to navigate the complexities of the game, businesses and individuals need a well-crafted plan to achieve their goals.
The Importance of a Playbook
A playbook for a football team is identical to a business plan for a business or a personal plan for orchestrating one’s life. Imagine how ineffective a football team would be if it entered a game without a game plan. The lack of coordination and direction would lead to chaotic play calling, ineffective player substitutions, and a disenchanted fan base. The same holds true for businesses and individuals who operate without a strategic plan.
Real-World Application
Consider a business owner who hires new employees but fails to provide a clear plan outlining their responsibilities and how these responsibilities interact with those of others in the company. The result is wasted time and money, similar to a football player who is unsure of his role on the field.
Writing Your Own Playbook
Have you taken the time to write your own playbook, whether it be in business or life? Football may appear random on the field, but it is highly structured behind the scenes. Each player knows their assignment and how it contributes to the team’s objective of moving the ball forward. This structure is essential to avoid chaos and ensure success.
Business and Life Parallels
In business and life, events happen, situations occur, and obstacles arise. How does one overcome these challenges? By referring back to their plan, reminding themselves of their goals and objectives, understanding their current position relative to these goals, resetting, and taking action.
Alan Lakein, a noted writer, said, “Planning is bringing the future into the present so that you can do something about it now.” This principle is embodied in a football playbook, which outlines the beginning, middle, and end (success) and how the team plans to achieve these goals.
The End Defined
The term “the end” refers to the accomplishment of a pre-established goal or objective. In business, this could mean securing a sale, achieving a benchmark, or rolling out a new product. In life, it could mean graduating, obtaining a new position, or achieving a personal milestone. Each success opens the door to new goals and objectives, requiring a plan to accomplish.
The Playbook in Action
A football game is the culmination of meticulous planning, assembling, and organizing a team in the off-season. This planning is the foundation for the team’s performance on game day. Similarly, each day in business should be guided by a strategic plan. Without a plan, daily activities become reactionary, benefiting those who cause the reactions rather than advancing one’s own goals.
Measuring Success
Success ebbs and flows. A plan provides a reference point for achieving success or hitting a benchmark as efficiently as possible. Do you have pre-established goals and the intermediate steps necessary to achieve them? Without a plan, the future in business and life is left to chance and reactionary activities.
Flexibility in Planning
While having a plan is crucial, it must also be flexible to accommodate unexpected challenges. Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon.com, said, “If you’re not stubborn, you’ll give up on experiments too soon. And if you’re not flexible, you’ll pound your head against the wall, and you won’t see a different solution to a problem you’re trying to solve.”
A football playbook is tweaked as the game progresses to address unforeseen obstacles posed by the opponent. Similarly, a business plan needs to be adaptable. The objective remains the same, but the path needs to be flexible..
The Role of Contingency Plans
Have you thought through contingencies in your business or life plan? What potential obstacles could arise, and how will you address them? Yogi Berra, a Hall of Fame baseball player, famously said, “If you don’t know where you are going, you’ll end up someplace else.”
The Macro and Micro Playbooks
A sports team has more than one playbook—a macro playbook and a micro playbook. The macro playbook covers activities and decisions leading up to game day, while the micro playbook is the game day playbook, which exposes the team to its competition and fans (clients/customers).
In business, the macro playbook involves activities like designing, manufacturing, and marketing a product, while the micro playbook focuses on delivering the product or service to the customer.
The Importance of a Plan
In both business and life, the two most critical resources are time and money. Not having a plan can cost you both. When the time comes to take action, a plan will greatly assist in making efficient and effective decisions. A plan also helps determine whether additional resources or personnel are necessary to achieve the desired outcome.
Conclusion: Using the Playbook
When utilized correctly, the principles outlined in “First and Ten on the Twenty…is it Football, Business or Life?” can serve as an outline for creating your business or personal playbook. A well-thought-out plan is essential for navigating challenges, achieving goals, and ensuring success.
In summary:
By having a playbook, you not only prepare for the challenges ahead but also ensure that you remain focused and proactive in pursuing your objectives. A strategic plan is the difference between success and chaos in both football and business. So, have you written your playbook yet?
