We all know someone who works so hard for tomorrow that they forget to enjoy today — and others who live only for the moment, never realizing that tomorrow will, inevitably, arrive. True success — in business, life, and leadership — lives in the balance between the two.
The Power of the Present
Every decision you make today creates the foundation for tomorrow’s opportunities. Much like a quarterback reading the field, today’s actions position you for what comes next. The key isn’t to live recklessly in the moment — it’s to live intentionally in the moment. Each meeting you attend, relationship you build, and skill you sharpen compounds toward your future success.
As H. Jackson Brown Jr. once said, “The best preparation for tomorrow is doing your best today.” Every day is both practice and performance — the present moment is where future wins are built.
The Future Isn’t Waiting
Business, like football, never stops evolving. The game changes — new technologies, new players, new rules. The companies and professionals who thrive are those who learn to evolve rather than react.
Sears didn’t anticipate the digital revolution which Amazon was preparing for. Sears was the original shop at home service with their catalogue system that dates back over 100 years.
Today Sears is gone, and Amazon is the premier shop at home company.
Your Core Must Stay Strong
Look at the sports franchises that are consistently in the playoffs irrespective of the sport. They have a system — grounded in consistent leadership, values, and preparation — allowing them to adapt year after year. That consistency of culture is the same foundation every company needs.
Leaders who invest in people, processes, and principles that stand the test of time are the ones who build organizations that thrive both today and tomorrow.
Personal Preparation is Professional Power
In my seminar, “Goals Are Great… Goals With a Plan Are Even Greater,” I define preparation as “the actions you take when no one is looking to enhance the actions you take when someone is looking.” The best leaders commit a few minutes each day to learn, refine, and strengthen their personal and professional game. Small, consistent steps today create massive advantages tomorrow.
Evolving with Purpose
Change doesn’t have to feel disruptive when you think of it as evolution. Evolution happens intentionally, with direction and purpose. The most successful professionals and businesses are those who make evolution part of their DNA — always learning, adapting, and growing.
The Bottom Line:
You can’t live only for today, and you can’t live only for tomorrow. The magic happens when you master both — when today’s excellence becomes tomorrow’s advantage.
Question for You:
How are you balancing the need to perform today with the responsibility to prepare for tomorrow?
This blog post draws on the insights from the tenth chapter, “Living for Today as You Prepare for Tomorrow” “, of my book “First and Ten on the Twenty…is it Football, Business or Life?”, where twenty-four aspects of the business and game of football are explored in depth on how they can be applied to business and life.
